WHILE leafleting in the Dyson Perrins Ward, it has been brought to my attention that the Election 2015 article in the Malvern Gazette on April 17 has left a number of voters confused.

The headline 'Few candidates so people will be co-opted to vacant seats' was followed by a short article, in bold type, starting with the words 'Electors will have no need to go the polls on Thursday, May 7, to elect members of Bromyard and Winslow Town Council'.

This has left some people with the impression that there are no seats being contested in Malvern, which couldn't be further from the truth.

The article in question refers only to the Bromyard and Winslow Town Council election, not to any Malvern parish (or town) council, and especially not to the Malvern Hills District Council elections.

To explain: In Worcestershire there are three levels of elections being held on May 7: parish (or town) elections; district elections and the parliamentary (general) election, while in Herefordshire there are two levels of elections being held on May 7: parish (and town) elections and the parliamentary (general) election (there are no district elections because Herefordshire is a unitary authority).

The main article on this page also referred only to the town election in Malvern, while the article on Page 27 referred only to the Parliamentary election.

No mention whatsoever was made of the district elections, where 20 of the 22 wards (totalling 36 seats) are being contested.

While the articles in the Gazette of April 24 are clearer, I want to ensure that, especially for those voters who only glance at the political columns and headlines, or don't read the Gazette every week, they do not retain that first false impression, as town councillors have no authority to make decisions about district council issues.

UKIP are fielding 10 candidates in the district elections, not nine (Gazette, April 24).
