Thanks from a new Councillor

7:10am Friday 27th August 2010

ON Thursday last week I was elected as a Councillor to represent Chase Ward on the Malvern Town Council.

Comment on Malvern Theatres

7:10am Friday 27th August 2010

I AM glad that Judi Massa so enjoyed Hi-de-Hi! at Malvern Theatres and share her concern that our theatre was "nearly empty" which cannot be good news for any of us. Has she, I wonder, attended like presentations at our local Courtyard, Roses, Swan and many other popular venues offering similar wholesome fare, and are these likewise undersubscribed? There does seem to be quite a lot of it about!

Thought for the Week

7:10am Friday 20th August 2010

WE live in a wonderful universe. The world around may cause us to marvel at the beauty of the created order. For people of faith, it is a God-given gift, which we need to care for and pass on to future generations without spoiling it further. Indeed we should try to undo some of the serious damage already caused by our lifestyle and live more simply.

Parking option for Ledbury

12:04pm Tuesday 17th August 2010

WE are halfway through the summer and no councillor has come up with any ideas for any parking, as usual.

Modified plans for river front

11:58am Tuesday 17th August 2010

THE plans for Upton's riverfront have now been modified, which means the letters for or against will not be considered if they were received by Malvern Hills District Council before August 17.

Thought for the Week

7:10am Friday 13th August 2010

“TIME flies like an arrow – fruit flies like a banana,” said Groucho Marx. Time certainly flies!

Ledbury Town FC comment

11:16am Wednesday 11th August 2010

IN response to Ben Symons front page statement on last week's Ledbury Reporter saying we at LTFC were not ambitious should come and take a look at what the volunteers have done in three weeks.

Ledbury's new library

10:01am Tuesday 10th August 2010

IT is apparent to me that funding for the new library development is rather like Billy Bunter's postal order, always promised but showing no signs of arrival. However, I would appreciate some public debate as to whether the new building would be obsolescent before it was built. There is a strong consensus of opinion that the traditional book will be superseded by the new ebook technology whereby an electronic device can be downloaded via the internet with many volumes. A friend of mine went on holiday recently with 12 full length volumes but only taking the space of one book. Currently, in USA, 180 ebooks are sold for every 100 hardbacks.

Thought for the Week

7:10am Friday 6th August 2010

SIXTY-five years ago this weekend, atomic bombs were dropped on the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). In a blinding flash and volcanic-like explosion, an awesome force of intense heat and radiation was unleashed, which swiftly and indiscriminately wreaked utter devastation.

Meeting with a future champion

10:04am Wednesday 28th July 2010

READING of Nigel Mansell's visit to Upton brought back memories.

Thanks for donations

9:55am Wednesday 28th July 2010

BISHOPWOOD Swan Rescue would like to thank the people of Malvern for giving so generously at their collection day on July 24 where the sum of £173 was raised.

Memories of roller skating

9:58am Wednesday 28th July 2010

I HAVE just read in Malvern Memories about a proposal to hold roller skating in the Winter Gardens.

Upton Flood Defences - another view

10:39am Tuesday 20th July 2010

THE latest flood defence plan for Upton-upon-Severn is nearly as bad as the previous one. The only improvement is not continuing the high wall past Crimmond Rose bungalow as far as the last house before the Ham: Old Walls. The part of the wall from the bridge past the Plough, King's Head, Bridge House and the Swan is the area frequented by tourists and visitors to our town in the summer.

Thought for the Week

7:10am Friday 16th July 2010

I WORK as a volunteer at Top Barn Training Centre, Holt, with a group of physically and mentally disabled adults. The therapeutic nature of the work growing crops and caring for animals is very high and for many of the clients life enhancing.

Education cuts

10:13am Tuesday 13th July 2010

FURTHER to the controversy over the decision not to fund the building of new schools, it must be noted that schools do not educate children. You could pack a class of children into a disused public toilet and with a good teacher, the children will learn.

Upton Flood Defences

10:01am Tuesday 6th July 2010

I WAS most surprised to read your article in the Malvern Gazette of Friday, June 26.

Cyclists on the hills - a possible solution?

3:56pm Monday 5th July 2010

WRITING in sympathy with the letter (Malvern Gazette, July 2) about the dangers from cyclists on the hills, I, too, this week had a near miss. Walking along the track to the Giant's Cave in a southerly direction, I heard the cyclist when he was only a few yards behind me. When he'd overtaken, I assumed I was safe but had a nasty shock when three or four others in close formation followed, without warning.

Rainfall reporting

3:48pm Monday 5th July 2010

IT was widely reported in last week's newspapers, and stated on the television, that Britain has experienced the driest first six months of the year since 1929. This originated from a Met Office press release.

Upton Flood Defences

12:14pm Monday 5th July 2010

YOU seem only to print positive letters regarding the proposed flood defences in Upton upon Severn, I am wondering why this is the case when there are so many people who feel that the choice of defences and the placement of the wall is entirely inappropriate.

Praise for waterfront proposals

12:34pm Tuesday 29th June 2010

WELL done the Environment Agency! They have listened to local suggestions and acted upon them. Their new Upton Waterfront proposals satisfy earlier concerns, and offer a stunningly attractive waterside pedestrian promenade.
