I COMPLETELY endorse Mike Yolland's letter (March 13) regarding the shocking felling of the much-loved chestnut tree in Abbey Road.

It is especially poignant when Malvern Civic Society's new Wilson Memorial is proposed to be installed nearby.

Clearly, the chestnut needs to be replaced by a substantially-sized specimen tree.

Councillor John Smith's suggestion that the area will be paved is totally inappropriate.

According to Malvern Springs and Wells, land for the original Wilson Memorial was given by Miss Palmer of South Abbotsfield (now Croftdown) on condition only one tree was felled.

Seats were moved to beneath the remaining trees to afford comfort and shade.

I am sure Malvern Civic Society would wish to see the late Miss Palmer's conditions respected.

Our iconic chestnut tree in Abbey Road has been part of Malvern's cultural heritage for over a century, not only giving pleasure to those who knew it and saw it every day, but also directly associated with one of the town's water cure founding fathers.

Without Miss Palmer's gift, there may not have been any land on which to construct the original memorial.

Today, we need to honour that gift and replace the chestnut tree.
