A CHARTERED accountant specialising in charities, I support the Malvern Hills Conservators and would ask that they be allowed to get on with the job that they were set up to do – looking after the hills, not investigating cable car schemes.

The Conservators’ recent vote not to consider the cable car plan now or in the future was really the only legal option open to them.

The Conservators are a registered charity, set up for specific objectives all to do with safeguarding the natural integrity of the hills.

Speculative commercial development is not within their remit.

The Conservators cannot use their funds to explore the cable car option without running the risk of being investigated by the Charity Commission (again).

Malvern for All, on the other hand, are free to speculate.

But they should not expect the Conservators to consider a business plan until it is legally watertight as regards development on the hills.

They have to fund it themselves. I suggest a crowdfunding site.

The Conservators cannot be expected to contribute at all – they have much better things to do with their funds (and their time).
