THE Worcestershire captain John Williams hosted a golf match against West Bromwich Albion's retired football players.

Though the home side won every match, the visitors relished playing the Malvern Wells course.

The Worcestershire pairings were Williams and Mark Read, Ryan Corbett and Jerry Hibbert, Roger Brierly and Gary Lynes and Dave Marshall and Chris Hardy.

Playing for WBA were Don Goodman and Nick Cross, Mick Fudge and Norman Westbury, Joe Mayo and Neil Betteridge and Ray Wilson and Geoff Snape.

Williams also led a team to Olton where all matches were close and the hosts won 3½-2½.

Winning pairs for The Worcestershire were Jim Wilde and Jerry Hibbert and Mike Day and Mike Bothma.

Dave Flanagan and Dave Turner halved their match.

Williams and Barry Caswell lost on the last hole and the other two pairs both lost 3&1.

They hope to redress the balance in a return home fixture in a few weeks.

The last seniors’ open of the year at The Worcestershire was a mixed competition which attracted 45 pairs.

Enjoying dry, bright weather and a course freshened by recent rainfall, the speed and slopes of The Worcestershire’s greens remained the players’ principal challenges.

Home contestants performed well with Liz Pool and Peter Hill taking third place on 36 and Jill Piner and Roger Brierly second on 38.

But the clear winners with 40 were John and Linda Maginnis from Moseley.

Opens’ organiser David Fawbert thanked all those who had helped him to provide a trouble-free season of events.
