DEBBIE Minett’s great potential was in evidence when she overcame experienced rival Mary Horrobin in The Worcestershire’s ladies singles knockout final.

In only her second season at the Malvern Wells club she lifted the Perrins Cup to add to other trophies already won this season.

Making good use of the four strokes she received from her rival Minett went one up after nine and four up after 18 in the 36-hole match.

She soon increased the lead to five before the screw was tightened on the last nine.

Horrobin brought all her experience to bear, dragging the match back to a one-hole deficit going to the 36th.

But she could not better Minett’s five which was sufficient for the newcomer to take the match-play crown.

Diane Meakin and Jane Poynder were the losing semi-finalists.

More silverware was up for grabs when The Worcestershire’s men competed in the autumn meeting medal.

The best round of the day came from 11-handicapper Nigel Allam who carded 67 nett to take Division One and lift the Claret Cup.

Roger Brierly (handicap 9) was second on 70 with Steve Carter (10) on 71.

John Whitehead (15) also had a fine round, taking Division Two and the Autumn Cup with 68.

Andrew Whiteley (16) and Nigel Collins (13) took the lesser placings with 71 and 72 respectively.

In Division Three, David Jeynes (27) headed the pack to win the Cotton Tankard with Len Coleman (24) on 72 and Edward Gaynor-Smith (22) on 73.

In the ladies’ nine-hole stableford, Pauline Taylor was a clear winner with 17 points ahead of Kate Cross in second and Marie Willis in third.

In the better-ball contest scores were tighter.

Chris Urry and Jackie Marks won on countback from Penny Stevenson and Julia Radley with both on 33 points.

Pat Rose and Sue Boardman were one point back to take third again on countback from Doreen Hunt and Jill Brierly.

April Wilding-Greene made the most of the better conditions to record 74 nett in the Doug Cotton Rose Bowl, a competition limited to those who had won an EG Medal over the last 12 months.

Her score was unmatched by the field.

Forty-five players played in the last of four seniors’ tankard competitions in mixed weather conditions.

Alan Martin won with 38 points on countback from Colin Lowe and Peter Kirton was third on countback with 36.

Three earlier competitions were won by Kirton, Andrew Colston and Ken Willett.

All winners are now eligible to play in the Champion of Champions competition.

A dozen players showed resilience and determination when they played for the Past Captains’ Bowl in challenging conditions.

Most completed the first nine holes in reasonable weather before heavy rain lashed the group and partially flooded some greens.

June Jones handled the conditions best, winning on countback from Ruth Scott with Kate Foster third.
