FORMER club champion Ursula Pearson regained the title when The Worcestershire ladies contested their most prestigious trophy.

The Club Championship Salver at the Malvern Wells club saw single-figure handicapper Pearson handle the gruelling 36-hole contest best in dry, blustery conditions and on lightning-fast greens.

She led the field by seven strokes with a total of 173 gross over the two rounds.

Former sports teacher Jackie Marks (180) took the runner-up slot ahead of Di Meakin (183) and Sally Dare (183).

By way of consolation, Marks lifted the Scott Cup for the best nett score over the 36 holes.

Her 152 was just one ahead of the improving Jane Poynder and two ahead of club stalwart June Jones.

In an 18-hole stableford in testing conditions, Davina Taylor won the Silver Division in front of Sue Boardman.

Joan Herbert took the Bronze Division followed by Penny Stevenson and Brenda Jones.

The best round of the day came from the Copper Division’s Jenny Jones, whose 37 points brought her home several strokes ahead of Jane Quick and Pauline Savage.

Jenny Bunyan won the nine-hole stableford with 18 points, one ahead of Esme Davy.

The weather was fair, if breezy, when a good turn-out of 58 pairs competed for the men’s Alan Courtney Cup.

Played in memory of the former club captain, the greensome stableford saw a win for the pairing of Phil Park (handicap 10) and Neil Smith (11).

Coming in with 43 points, they were three ahead of former club secretary Terry Smith (7) and Gary Lynes (11) and Bob Wilson (18) and Ian Forrester (8), both on 40.

David Bray (24) and Rob Marroitt (23) took the fourth slot ahead of Barry Caswell (9) and John Davies on 39.

Last year’s captain Roger Brierly (8) and Dave Stephens were close behind on 38.

In club matches, The Worcestershire’s men travelled to Olton where they suffered a 5½-2½ defeat against a strong Olton team.

However, there were good wins for Terry and Tony Cox and Sam McLoed and Pat McIlroy.

Team captain Mark Read looks forward to entertaining the Olton team in September for the home fixture.

There was better fortune for a mixed side, who secured a fine 5-3 win at Cotswold club Naunton Downs in dry, sunny, blustery conditions.

The Worcestershire’s team captains Brenda and Trevor Cox were among the winning pairs as were Jill and Brian Piner, Steph and Chris Nixon, Jenny and Colin Jones and Sally and Andrew Dare.

Meanwhile, the seniors’ section played the second of their four Tankard competitions.

Played off a measured course from the yellow tees, the qualifying competitions have proved hugely popular.

The winner was Mike Travis with 40 stableford points ahead of Colin Lowe (38) and David Anderson (37).
