THE FA Trophy provides Hereford United with their last chance of silverware success this season — and it’s only November 1.

United head to Totton today (3pm) for a first qualifying round match having failed to win a cup match this season.

The Bulls are already out of the FA Cup, after suffering one of their most humiliating defeats at Ellistown and Ibstock United, and didn’t make it beyond the Red Insure Cup preliminary round.

It is a sorry situation for a club that reached the FA Cup fourth round proper in 2011, eventually losing to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Their expulsion from the Conference in the summer saw them forced to enter the famous knockout competition three rounds earlier at the first qualifying round stage.

Their match in the Red Insure Cup — effectively the Southern League Cup — against Cinderford Town was the only fixture in that round, possibly because the Bulls’ participation in the league was still under threat when the draw was made.

Failing to progress in the competitions has also seen cash-strapped United miss out on much-needed prize money.

Although the £2,700 on the line for victory today in the Trophy would not do much as far as their winding-up order goes, it is money the club could do with.

Totton, who are based near Southampton, play a level below the Bulls in Division One South and West and sit eighth in the table.

Manager Jon Taylor admitted: “I don’t know a lot about Totton.

“I’ll speak to a couple of managers in the division below to see if we can find out at least how they set up.

“But today we have to worry about how we are going to play, rather than what they are going to do.”

Hereford are looking for back-to-back wins for the first time this season after winning 5-1 at Banbury United last Tuesday.

Sam Bobes-Gilroy, Josh Hawker, Steve Vetier, Bilal Yafai and Obi Onyeike were on target after Hereford conceded in the first minute.
