WEST Malvern lost by two wickets as Claverley took over at the top of Worcestershire League Division Five.

After a solid start by Glenn Collins (35) and Steve Wright (21), only Phil Chaundy and Joe Bird scored more than 20 on a difficult pitch as the visitors posted 172-8 from 50 overs.

Despite a fine spell from Matt Gammon (5-48) and 2-31 from Chaundy, opener Naveed Khan rode his luck to post a match-winning score of 75 not out in their 173-8 off 49 overs.

The seconds beat Claverley by 63 runs after dismissing their visitors for 128 in 48 overs.

After electing to bat in perfect conditions, West’s top four batsmen failed to take advantage.

Skipper Jeff Barnes made a useful 26 but Tim Maccormac showed the way with an aggressive 72.

He was ably supported by debutant Jack Dakin (14) and Kevin Gilbert (39no) attempted to ensure the tail posted a competitive 191 all out in 36.5 overs.

Claverley had a healthy 53 overs to overhaul the target but their opponents claimed the 24 points with John Owens taking 3-19, Simon Wood 3-29 and Simon Harrison 2-29.

West were outclassed by Old Vigornians in their Sunday friendly, going down by 84 runs.
