MALVERN Rugby Club brought the curtain down on their National Three Midlands campaign on Saturday looking to complete the double over cellar- dwellers Manchester.

The Spring Lane side beat the basement boys 44-11 in September and bid to repeat the feat on home soil, while also notching up their third consecutive win.

Liam Hughes’ mid-table side won 31-3 at local rivals Hereford last Saturday and saw off Hinckley 23-15 the weekend before.

Although already-relegated Manchester have won two of their last three games, including a narrow 16-15 victory over Scunthorpe, Malvern are keen to finish the season on a high.

They also hope for a healthy attendance to round off the campaign in style at Spring Lane.

Head coach Hughes said: “We definitely won’t be taking Manchester lightly. It took us 50 minutes at their place to get some rhythm and they have vastly improved since then.

“But the lads are full of confidence having put two very strong performances together. It promises to be a great game and we hope for a big crowd for our final game of the season.”

The match will also see Malvern bid farewell to blindside flanker Simon Daws, who is leaving the club after four years.

The back-row forward’s work commitments have increased coaching Old Swinford Hospital School after leading them to the Daily Mail Cup Under 18s final where they lost 15-8 to Dulwich College at Twickenham.

Hughes added: “We are gutted to see Simon moving on. He is a bit of a victim of his own success with regards to his coaching and rightfully looks to concentrate on that side of his rugby next season.”
