CHASE student Jenny White surprised herself when she took gold in the Amateur Athletic Association's under 15 championships at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.

Fourteen-year old Jenny won the 75 metre hurdles in a new personal best time of 11.40 seconds and also finished sixth in the 100m with a time of 12.62secs.

Her hurdles time puts her inside the United Kingdom Athletics Power of 10 initiative performance target of 11.49 secs that qualifies her for extra coaching and increasing target levels that would lead up to the Olympic Games in 2012.

Malvern-based Jenny said: "It all worked on the day and I did much better than I expected. But it was a close race."

A member of the Worcester Athletic Club, where her father and coach Richard competes in the club's senior and master's teams, Jenny trains four or five times a week.

She said: Athletics is my main hobby so my training fits in around other stuff."

An all-round athlete, Jenny is not concentrating on hurdles alone and is currently preparing for the English Schools Multi-Event which takes place on Sunday, September 17, when she will take part in the shot putt, hurdles, long jump, high jump and the 800m.
