TWO Malvern-based paddlers tasted success at the British Canoe Union National Championships at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham.

Emily Lewis and Emma Hawthorn were both crowned national champions.

Lewis 17, a student at St Mary’s Worcester was the fastest under 18 junior girl over 200 metres in the individual K1 sprint, took silver in the 500m and bronze in the 1,000m individual sprints.

With her European Championships partner Kathryn Trotter in the K2 (double), they cleared up, taking the gold medals in all three events entered, the 200m, 500m, and 1000m sprints.

Hawthorn, 17, a Chase Technology student, was successful in the K4 (quadruple) event winning gold with her crew in both the 500m and 1,000m sprints.

Racing with Sophie Rooney, from Banbury Canoe Club, they also took the bronze medal in the 200m K2 sprint.

It was a great performance by these Worcester Canoe Club girls and the club itself having returned with a total of six national champions at the regatta.The sprint season has now ended.
