Vaults FC 4, Hornets Res 0.

VAULTS were back in the thick of the Worcester Division Four action and welcomed Hornets Reserves to a damp and windy Lower Howsell.

The opening 10 minutes of the game saw both sides trying to keep hold of the ball well despite the blustery conditions.

But it was Vaults that opened the scoring with Ben Allen threading the ball through to split the Hornets tight back- line.

He found James McKee, who broke the back four’s offside trap to casually slot away and open the Vaults account.

McKee’s opener seemed to stir up the Hornets’ nest and they continually pressed the Vaults back-line.

But it wasn’t just the defence the Hornets were battling against but they also found the strong winds against them.

With Hornets goalkeeper Andy Wood struggling to clear his kicks out of his own half.

Vaults were alert to this and firmly pitched themselves deep in the Hornets half. After the half-hour mark, and a barrage of Vaults efforts, Hornets managed to create a great breakaway with a delicate ball over the Vaults defence which let in Jamie Campbell.

He only had the keeper to beat from six yards as his shot looked destined for the far corner but for Vaults goalkeeper Darren Cox to save.

It wasn’t long before top goal scorer Graham Jones fired in a quick-fire double with an 18- yard strike and a rare header at the back post.

The second-half, despite the Hornets having the wind advantage, failed to capitalise on this and seemed happy to sit back and defend.

Hornets keeper Wood being kept busy by Brunger, McKee and Jones who was looking for his hat-trick.

It didn’t take long for Jones to seal the victory when he latched onto an excellent through-ball before smashing passed an advancing Wood from a tight angle.
