THE return of warmer weather produced a sizzling try feast of 11 scores as Upton-upon-Severn won 41- 29 at Shipston-on-Stour in Midlands Two West (South).

Relegated Upton did not do their hosts’ own hopes of survival any good and were inspired by outstanding openside flanker Tom Dodge.

Starting uphill into the wind, the visitors controlled a few phases but the Warwickshire side hit back by driving under the posts from a line-out to score a converted try.

Captain Matthew Cock kept Upton’s heads up and was rewarded with 60 minutes of devastating rugby union.

They pulled Shipston all over the pitch with fly-half Tom Bryant cleverly alternating play and centre Dan Keyte pushing the ball over the gain-line.

Upton scored their first try after 10 minutes through Dan Aldersey out wide after Guy Field and Charlie Abbey rumbled into the defence.

The Old Street side took a 12-7 lead five minutes later through Cock after good work from Field, Keyte and Bryant who converted.

But, despite strong defence from Oli Jones and Max Macfarlane, Shipston bundled over a five-metre penalty with their large forwards and converted to regain the lead.

Bryant kicked a penalty and then Aldersey scooped up a wayward pass to sprint in a converted try from 50 metres, making the half-time score 22-14.

With the slope and wind in their favour, Upton finished the game off in the first 20 minutes of the second period.

Bryant found Rob Heeley and the converted fly-half drew the centre before popping a pass to Aldersey for his hat-trick try.

Bryant converted before Upton scored a fifth when the returning Liam Moloney ripped the ball free and fed Keyte down the right who in turn provided Alex Flower with the chance to barge over.

Shipston pulled a try back but teenage flanker Rich Clive put in a huge tackle and Dodge ran in from 20 metres with Bryant converting to make it 41-19.

With 15 minutes left, Upton were reduced to 14 men when Neil Perrins was sent to the sin-bin for the team’s accumulation of penalties.

Upton started to slip off tackles which allowed Shipston two more tries in the last 10 minutes but a superb tackle from Joe Ayres prevented another.
