SUNDAY EVENING UPDATE: More chaos on Monday

WORK to repair a water leak in Worcester Bridge is set to continue into tonight after workmen acccidentally struck an electricity cable.

During this evening's rush hour, traffic backed up along Hylton Road as far as the railway viaduct, and up Tybridge Street as well, although a complete gridlock was avoided at the junction of Bridge Street, New Road and Hylton Road.

THE mystery of what has caused a large water leak on Worcester Bridge has been solved.

Severn Trent Water teams were working on the site today (Friday) after water began flowing down the bridge and along New Road earlier in the week.

Engineers were originally baffled as tests found the water had not come from its pipes.

However, the Severn Trent teams have found there is a length of pipe which needs repairing after they closed one lane of the bridge to carry out an investigation.

Repair work is now expected to take a couple of days.

A spokeswoman for the water company said: "Our teams are working on the repair today [Friday], we’re replacing a length of pipe and this may take a couple of days.

"We’ve had to close one lane for the safety of our team but we will aim to repair the pipe and re-open the road as quickly as possible.

"We are really sorry about any inconvenience this may be causing."

Investigations will be carried out by Severn Trent to find out what caused the water pipe to burst.

The lane was closed from 9.30am with double crews working to ensure the job is completed as quickly as possible.

One lane of New Road is also due to be closed.
