DRIVERS are being reminded of the best ways to react when they see emergency vehicles flashing blue lights and sounding its sirens, on the roads in Worcestershire.

Motorists are being reminded of the guidance after Rob Moore, from West Midlands Ambulance Service, tweeted about an incident in which drivers, trying to be helpful, drove through red traffic lights to allow ambulances to pass.

Mr Moore wrote: "On blue lights and had cars ahead of us driving through red traffic lights to allow us to pass a few times.

"Whilst it’s great that people want to help us, this can be really dangerous.

"If you’re at a red light and there are blue lights behind you, we’ll either find a way around you, or wait.

"If the blue light vehicle turns its sirens off, this may indicate that we are waiting until it is safe to pass."

He added the only time drivers should pass a red light, is when a police officer directs you to.

"Ambulance staff don’t have the powers to ask you to do that," he added.

The service has also tweeted out an information video, providing further guidance. The video can also be viewed on the news page of the ambulance service's website, wmas.nhs.uk.
