THE work of a group helping men in Worcestershire battling prostate cancer has been recognised with an award.

The Worcestershire Prostate Cancer support group has been given the award by Prostate Cancer UK.

The group was recognised for the services it offers their members, including the buddy scheme where people affected by prostate cancer can be matched up with people who have been through treatment already.

There are around 30 buddies who have all attended a course run by Macmillan, which gives them the skills to provide practical and emotional support.

The group, founded in 2000, has grown throughout the years and now has more than 400 members, making it the biggest in the country.

The award was presented on January 19 at a ceremony at Kidderminster Town Hall to Adel Makar, Worcestershire lead cancer clinician and president of the support group.

Mr Makar, a consultant urological surgeon at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am privileged to be associated with the fantastic work done by the support group in raising awareness of prostate cancer and helping patients and families affected.”
