A SINGER songwriter made an emotional tribute to David Bowie on Worcester High Street.

As news of the Starman's death filtered through yesterday morning, Jamie Knight decided to perform some of Bowie's biggest hits.

Armed with only his guitar, chair and tealight candles, he set up outside HMV Worcester with a performance which stopped shoppers in their tracks.

Bowie died on Sunday, aged 69, after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Mr Knight, from Barbourne, said: "I couldn't believe it when I heard the sad news.

"I listened to Life on Mars and wept, I have loved David Bowie all my life, so I then told my wife I'm off to pay tribute outside HMV who were also playing his songs.

"I put out candles for people to light and played Life On Mars, Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, Changes, and my all time favourite Star Man.

"I've been playing Bowie songs for over 15 years in bars and live venues.

"David Bowie is the reason I ever did music. God bless him."
Mr Knight's performance was a touching tribute appreciated by Bowie fans in Worcester.
Many stopped to listen, some sang along while others had tears in their eyes and lit candles in memory of their idol.

The singer, aged 41 who performs with Jamie Knight and the Manuka Band, said the reaction was incredible.

"People were coming up to me and telling me how important he was in their lives, there was quite a lot of tears and one woman came over and danced.

"David Bowie got me into music from a very, very young age, he's the reason I picked up a guitar - he's a legend and his death will be up there with Elvis and Lennon's."

Aimee Bristow wrote on the Worcester News Facebook page:

"Anyone else see a man singing David Bowie songs outside Worcester HMV today with candles lit?

"Had a little chat and what a lovely guy and he wasn't doing it for money. Made my day."

Snoopy Takawaki said: "I spoke to this guy when he was singing Life on Mars he was great."
