A MAN aged 20 died this morning after being struck by a train in Droitwich.

The collision took place at the Colford foot crossing at 8.44am.

Emergency services attended the incident but the man hit, who lived in Droitwich, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several police cars and ambulances were reportedly seen at the crossing, which leads from Teesdale Close to Westbury Avenue.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We were called to a foot crossing close to Droitwich Spa station at 8.44am today to reports of a person being struck by a train.

“Colleagues from West Mercia Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service also attended and a 20-year-old man from Droitwich Spa was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and the man's family has been informed.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

London Midland confirmed the affected train - the 7.34am train from Hereford to Birmingham New Street - was taken out of service.

Several trains between Hereford and Birmingham were cancelled and disruption is expected to continue until at least lunchtime.

But replacement coach services have been put in place and ticket restrictions have been lifted.

The Worcester News has previously reported residents' concerns about the Colford foot crossing, but the circumstances of this particular death are not currently known.

John Cook, of Oakleigh Road, labelled the crossing "disgraceful" in November.

He claimed a gate was broken and called for urgent repairs.

Lisa Ventura, from St John's, Worcester, was on the train this morning.

"I am on the train that hit a person who died at Droitwich this morning heading to a work meeting in Birmingham, it is moving now but I'm really shaken.

"I knew something awful had happened.

"My thoughts are with the deceased and their family, so sad just before Christmas."
