A CRYING woman seen on the wrong side of the railings was talked down from Worcester bridge this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident at the River Severn at 8.30am after concerns were raised for the safety of the woman, believed to be her in 50s.

But her work colleagues talked her down before the crews arrived – and she is now “safe and well” after receiving medical care.

It is unclear why the woman was on the wrong side of the railings.

Eyewitness Paula Jones, who called 999 after driving past the incident, said: “She looked like she was crying and dabbing her face with a hankie.

“It was very scary to see and my heart was in my mouth. She was hanging on by one hand and looking down at the water.

“She was over the metal railings so would have been able to jump or fall straight in.

"I would have been heartbroken if she had fallen in and drowned if I hadn't done anything, so I called the police as soon as possible.

"They said they had received a number of calls about the incident.

"Thank God she is ok."

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: “Emergency services were called at approximately 8:30am on Wednesday, after concerns were raised for a woman in her 50s who had been on the opposite side of the railings of the bridge in Worcester.

"When police attended, the woman’s colleagues had managed to talk her back onto the bridge and escorted her back to work.

“She was later treated by ambulance services and is now safe and well."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service added: "We were called to a woman for whom there were concerns about her welfare.

"She was assessed, given advice and discharged at the scene."
