A VEHICLE with a trailer of hay bales overturned on the M5 in Worcestershire today.

The crash, which scattered bales across the carriageway, blocked all three lanes and caused traffic mayhem for morning commuters.

No-one was seriously injured following the incident at 8.14am between junction six for Worcester North and five for Droitwich.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent one ambulance to the scene but one patient declined hospital treatment.

The motorist, who had a small cut to his elbow, was assessed and given advice.

Medical staff were on-site for about 20 minutes.

Firefighters from Worcester and Droitwich were also sent to the scene.

No-one was trapped in the overturned vehicle.

The Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews worked to make the scene safe.

Andrew Daniels, an eyewitness, said: "Thankfully no-one was injured - just the farmer's pride."

The crash, which left both the vehicle and trailer on their sides, caused traffic chaos.

Official traffic alerts classified the incident as "severe". Cars and lorries behind the crash were stationary while crews worked to clear the motorway.

Pip Armstrong took to Facebook to write: "Ah, that's why the traffic's completely hideous everywhere else this morning then!"

Meanwhile further north a car fire caused a lane to be closed at the M6 junction eight link with the M5, adding further woes for motorists.

The Central Motorway Police Group said the fire caused "significant delays" while the damage was assessed.
