A TEENAGE cyclist was airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car in Worcester.

The girl,  aged 16, suffered serious head injuries following the crash in Tolladine Road at about 10.30am.

Two Midlands Air Ambulance helicopters landed at Hollymount School and paramedics immobilised the teenager using a neck collar and spinal board before flying her to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Police have confirmed she was airlifted to the QE Hospital with head injuries where she is in a stable condition and remains in hospital for observation.

Eyewitness Basharat Ali said the incident was "shocking" and that he feared for the girl's health.

He added that members of the public rushed to help and reassure the unconscious cyclist before emergency crews arrived.

The crash took place at the junction of Tolladine Road and Holly Mount Road, where a mountain bike broken in two was seen.

Two cars were allegedly involved with one hitting the girl and another being struck by the bicycle as it flew through the air.

They were a Nissan and a Peugeot.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent a paramedic support officer and a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle to the scene while several West Mercia Police officers were also in attendance.

Tolladine Road was closed until about 12.42pm.

Mr Ali, a taxi driver, said: "It was shocking and I still can't believe it.

"I'm just worried about her condition and hope she is ok.

"We went to her and tried to help. She was knocked unconscious.

"All we could do was try and reassure her.

"She was clipped by a car and in a matter of seconds ended up in the middle of the road.

"It was just lucky she was not hit head on."
