A Beagle who broke his back is up on his feet again after a helping hand from his friends.

Kate Donovan was warned Bilbo might not survive after being hit by a car just before his first birthday last November.

But thanks to a huge effort from his vet and tender loving care from the Donovan family he pulled through the worst.

Then, animal lovers dug deep to help fund extra treatment for him through a GoFundMe campaign.

Donations worth more than £900 flooded into the online appeal set up to help Bilbo, which enabled the family to speed up his recovery.

Now, after months of using wheels to help him walk, he is on the verge of getting properly back on his feet.

Mrs Donovan, aged 51, from Hardknott Row, Warndon Villages, said: "Our vets, Severn Vets in Brindley Place, Warndon Villages, are wonderful people.

"They really did save his life.

"He was going to be put down and the orthopaedic surgeon said, 'we could do this.'"

Bilbo had his broken vertebrae pinned and was fitted with a pair of wheels on his hind legs, to help him walk and run in March 2015.

However when his progress stalled Mrs Donovan's friend Donna Richardson set up the GoFundMe campaign to fund extra treatments like acupuncture, massage and swimming.

Mrs Donovan said: "We had got to a point where we'd done a lot but he wasn't showing any more signs of improvement.

"Everyone from a Beagle website he had featured on wanted to help with his progress.

"They all absolutely love him.

"It is astonishing that so many people across the world have been touched by his story and have dug into their pockets to help him.”

Thanks to the donations, Bilbo has received several acupuncture sessions and his family say they have seen an improvement in his condition.

Mrs Donovan added: "We are so very grateful for all the kindness people have shown in donating so much money."

GoFundMe, a fundraising website, provides a platform for people to organise their own campaign to raise money for personal causes and life events and invite those in their community to support their fundraising.
