CHILDREN and teenagers are being encouraged to let their creative talents flow and enter into the spirit of this year’s Worcester City Show.
Now in its 10th year, the popular annual event is a real family affair and offers a host of activities for all ages whether it’s entering some of the 120 classes or just coming along on the day – Sunday August 16 - to enjoy the fun and entertainment.
The organisers claim this year will be bigger and better than ever and there is plenty for the younger members of the family with a number of new classes designed specifically for children and teenagers.
The new classes include:
• Design and build your own creation out of Lego
• Make a landmark British building out of recycled cardboard boxes and materials
• Create a picture with a title which includes the word ‘light’
• Make an ‘out of this world’ object from recycled plastic, and give it a name
• Create a ‘garden of the future’ in a seed tray, using natural and recycled materials
• ‘Upcycle’ a piece of clothing or a fashion accessory
Michelle Newell, Worcester City Council community engagement team leader and member of the show organising committee, says: “We’ve come up with some completely new and really exciting classes for young people to enter in this year’s Worcester Show.
“It’s a great opportunity to encourage children to take a break from high tech gadgets, and to discover the immense satisfaction you can get from making new things from scratch.”
Entering the show is simple and free. Go to www.worcestershow.org.uk or call the Customer Service Centre on 01905 722233. Entries to the classes must be received by August 10 – however entry to the photography classes must be submitted by 5pm today Wednesday August 5.
There will also be plenty for visitors to the show to do and see this year. The Sports Zone has been expanded this year and a number of local clubs from football and cricket to table tennis and gymnastics clubs will be giving displays and inviting people to take part.
There will also be a Victorian carousel, bouncy castle, fancy dress competition and a display of owls.
Apart from the creations entered in the show’s culinary classes, there will be food from around the globe for visitors to try and beverages for all tastes. There will also be demonstrations by award-winning bread maker Janice Bell, cake icing supremo Heather Sweet and burger maker Carl Sampson.
This year, six societies will be at the Show – including the South Worcester Bonsai Society, Worcester Bee Keepers, Worcester Society of Artists, Worcester Cactus Society, Alpine Garden Society, Worcester Allotment Forum and ‘United in Knitting’ group.
Renowned Worcester gardening presenters Reg Moule and Mike George will be offering their green-fingered expertise and advice for a Gardeners’ Question Time.
“Whether you have entered your prized flowers, vegetables, culinary masterpieces, photographs or crafts, want to try out a new sport or simply want to wander through the stalls, listen to live music and soak up the atmosphere, the Worcester Show is the place for the whole family,” added Michelle.
