100 YEARS AGO.

There were a large number of excursionists in the town on Tuesday, and these weatherwise people were more fortunate than the trippers of the previous day. Instead of rain, there was plenty of sunshine and they were able to roam the hills and view the countryside in comfort. The numbers who ascended the Beacon on Monday were comparatively few and those who did go up 'the lonely height' had cause to remember their journey. The donkeys too on Monday were 'under the weather'.

50 YEARS AGO.

Former Priors of Malvern - Wykewane, Whitborn and Eston - are to be commemorated in the names of streets on the Guarlford Road private development estate. Further streets will be named Hastings Road and Red Earl Lane. The road through the estate will be named Elgar Avenue after the famous Worcestershire composer. "It's a long overdue honour," commented Councillor R W Green on Tuesday. Victoria Road, Malvern Link, will in future be known as Victoria Park Road.

25 YEARS AGO.

Rail fans in the area will be steaming down to Great Malvern station today (Friday) for the official reopening of the new building. British Rail has long promised light at the end of the tunnel over the project, started after the disastrous 1986 fire. but today the light will be in the Colwall tunnel as Severn Valley Railway's Hinton Manor steams in, pulling the Victorian saloon car of Sir Bill McAlpine, chairman of Railway Heritage, following which BR chairman Sir Robert Reid will unveil a plaque.
