POLICE will be cracking down on drivers speeding through the village of Bransford following complaints from residents A speed camera van will be posted at the Suckley Road to enforce the 30mph limit there, after the Safer Road Partnership discovered that almost two-thirds of drivers break the limit.

The news has been welcomed by villagers who have been calling for action before somebody is killed.

Resident Mal Cooke, who has been heading the campaign, said: "I'm delighted the partnership has acted so quickly. We are a quiet village, and children go out on their bikes on the road, and it's just not suitable for that sort of speed.

"The near-misses I've seen over the last few years have been quite breathtaking."

John Sharp, chairman of Leigh and Bransford Parish Council, said: "For some time, the council has been concerned about speed in the parish, particularly for the safety of school children who walk to school and back in the mornings and evenings.

"We have been working with the police and the speed partnership to encourage motorists to slow down, so this news is very welcome.

"Suckley Road is a small, relatively narrow road, and we've had several accidents along there already. If something is not done, someone will get badly hurt or worse."

Speed data collected by the Safer Roads Partnership shows that 62 per cent of drivers exceed the 30mph limit, with 15 per cent travelling above 38.5mph.

Katy Jenkins of the partnership said: “We are launching speed enforcement in direct response to the issue of speeds on the road, which has been raised with us by the parish council and concerned local residents.”
