TWO students from Hanley Castle HIgh School will meet a Holocaust survivor and visit a World War Two concentration camp after being awarded a bursary by the Lessons from Auschwitz programme.

Claudia Freemantle and Tom Whatmore, who are both in year 12, will attend two training sessions in Birmingham before travelling to Poland to the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp, located in Oswiecim outside of Cracow.

On their return to school they will act as ambassadors and teach younger students about their experiences.

Head of humanities Ben Kingswood said the pair had submitted an “excellent presentation” to be awarded the bursary.

“The trip will allow two of our lead students to appreciate the horrors which unfolded during World War Two, and then to pass on their experiences to our younger pupils,” he added.

More than 10,000 students from the UK have visited Auschwitz as part of the scheme since 1999. For more information visit lfaproject.org.uk.
