POLICE are launching a crackdown on crime in the shopping areas around Malvern in the run-up to Christmas and the January sales.

Officers based in the town have launched a two-pronged assault on criminals who prey on shoppers and business owners during the festive season.

Operation Blast will focus on crimes including shoplifting, handbag and purse thefts, and fraud, while Operation Falcon will seek to prevent thefts from motor vehicles. Officers will also be giving out crime-prevention advice.

PC Cliff Green of Malvern police's Safer Neighbourhoods Team said: "We will be increasing visible police presence, and officers will also be patrolling in plain clothes to identify and deal with criminals over the Christmas period.

"This is not a response to an increase in crime, but an initiative to maintain low crime levels. Malvern is a safe and pleasant place to live, and we intend to keep it that way.

"During December and January, retail areas become extra busy with shoppers. This presents opportunities for criminals to target members of the public and businesses.

"People can greatly reduce the chances of becoming a victim by being alert and taking steps to become less vulnerable."

Among the precautions that police recommend is being careful with card PIN numbers, not keeping the number with the card and covering the keypad when entering the number.

Shoppers are also warned not to be distracted by strangers, keep handbags securely fastened and not to carry large amounts of cash.

Vehicles should always be locked when you leave them and valuables should not be left in view.

PC Green said: "The message we want to get across to any criminals thinking of coming to Malvern is 'Don't bother. We're ready for you'."

Jane Knowles, chairman of Barnards Green Traders Association, said: "We certainly welcome this. We have a good relationship with the local police officers anyway; if there's something going on, they come and talk to us.

"The other thing is we have a lot of solidarity among ourselves. If one of us gets a funny banknote, we contact each other to spread the word."
