AROUND 1,200 runners will be putting the finishing touches to their training regimes, ahead of next Wednesday's Race for Life at the Three Counties Showground.

Organisers of the women-only race, in aid of Cancer Research UK, are pleased with the numbers, which are on a par with last year's event - the first to be held in Malvern. "We're really happy that the people of Malvern have kept with us again this year," said race spokesman Richard Brown.

"Last year, we had some difficulties with registering on the website, but it has been fine this year, and obviously hasn't put people off this time."

Among those limbering up to take part are 14 staff members from Northleigh Primary School, in Malvern.

Teacher Ruth McManus organised the runners, and so far, sponsorship has reached £765.

They are hoping to raise £1,000 and are asking any parents or pupils who would like to sponsor their teacher, to pop into the school.

"It's a wonderful community event to be involved in, and we're very pleased to be raising money for such important research and running in memory of some very special people," said headteacher, Rose Carberry.

The race, which starts at 7.30pm, will follow the same course as last year, but with added extras.

Special canopies will shade people from the sun, free suncream will be handed out, and Malvern's Attiva health and fitness club staff will be leading essential warm-up routines.

Another new addition, and one for the ladies, are the Nivea male cheerleaders, who will encourage the runners and their supporters.

"There'll be lots going on, so we encourage people to come along and watch the race too," added Mr Brown.

"Hopefully, the weather will be good, so it should be a great atmosphere."
