LAST week's Aviva Tour Ride in Worcestershire has been hailed a major success - after it emerged 786 cyclists took part in the extravaganza.

Decision-makers say they have been left delighted by the buzz the event generated after former world champion Hugh Porter MBE helped attract a massive haul of participants.

The ride, which took place on Sunday, October 4, saw entrants take part in one of three different routes headlined by a 100-mile 'Pro' course to test their endurance.

Mr Porter cycled the 40-mile loop, with business leaders saying the high-profile event was a major boost to the county's profile.

Gary Woodman, executive director for Worcestershire's Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), said: "It was fantastic to see so many people participating in the ride.

"These high-profile sporting events have a hugely positive impact on our local economy and the Aviva Tour Ride in particular is a brilliant event for showcasing the county to those who may not have visited Worcestershire before.

"We heard many participants including Hugh Porter talk about Worcestershire’s natural beauty, and several participants are already considering returning to Worcestershire."

Alongside the tour some people also took part in a special Aviva 'Family Ride'.

Parents and children of all ages went along to cycle the three-and-a-half miles around the riverside in Worcester.

Councillor Tony Miller, the vice-chairman of Worcestershire County Council, said: "The support for the event was enormous and it was good to see children and adults all getting out on their bikes to explore world class Worcestershire.

"The county has done a great job of hosting the tour ride and I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in the running and organisation of the event."

The Aviva Tour Ride, previously known as the Friends Life Tour Ride, was launched in 2009 as the official sportive of the Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour races.

It gives amateur cyclists the chance to have the professional experience and rub shoulders with some top athletes.
