WEST Malvern already has its World Champion – our 18-year-old cyclo-cross superstar Evie Richards, who hit the Gazette's front page last week for her dashing exploits in Holland. Now it is about to host the World Premiere of a new musical work by a village resident. “The March of the Pensionistas” by composer and violin maker Padraig Ó Dubhlaoidh (Paddy O'Dooley to his local friends!) will be played in public for the first time at the Brewers' Armpit next Wednesday February 17 at 6.30pm.
The piece commemorates a recent visit by the West Malvern Walking Group, a bunch of (fairly) senior residents, to the island of Madeira, where the village greybeards were promptly dubbed the Pensionistas by local taxi drivers. Their more usual activities are regular summer evening walks ending at the Brewers' Arms Curry Night.
We understand that Wednesday's momentous occasion will be marked with due ceremony and formal dress, with extra musical contributions from local inStrumentalists. One of these, we hear, could even be the Green Party's candidate to become the next West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner – better known in West Malvern as John Raine, our organist at St James's Church! Admission will be free, with a voluntary collection for (appropriately) Age UK.
