FIRST a reminder of various events in the village this weekend.

Tomorrow evening (Saturday) at 7.30pm the Gloucester Waits will begin their unusual concert of early instrumental music at St James's Church in aid of the organ fund. And starting at 7pm at Mathon Court will be the cricket club's Music Night with the UnderCoVers, pig roast and bar, followed on Sunday at 2pm by the Presidents' XI challenge match.

Another event in support of the organ appeal is planned for next Saturday, August 1 - but not in West Malvern! A summer concert of music and words has been organised to take place at Colwall's ancient and beautiful St James's church at 7.30pm in memory of the late Reverend Peter Baron, for many years vicar of West Malvern, and his wife Mary. It will include musical performances by: tenor James Oxley, soprano Hilda Webb, the Volante String Quartet, Colwall Church Choir and West Malvern organist John Raine, with poems from Janet Dale and others. Tickets £10 (with concessions) to include wine and canapes, available in advance from John Goodwin, Colwall, the Malvern Book Co-operative and on the door.

August will bring a new round of village activity, headed by the West Malvern Arts Festival from Friday, August 21-Sunday, August 23. The Festival, now in its sixth year, will have a wide variety of art on show and/or for sale from up to 70 artists. Full details at www.westmalvernarts.org. An added attraction that weekend will be the Garden and Nature Club's annual Flower Show on the Saturday afternoon.
