AT the March meeting members were pleased to welcome Bob Price as speaker.

As on previous occasions, he gave a fascinating illustrated talk. This time his subject was working in Nepal where, whilst in the army, he spent three years among the Gurkhas.

He explained how it was a legacy of the East India Company that meant these people from a non-commonwealth country provide troops for the British army. It is considered an honour to serve, there being fierce competition when it comes to recruitment. It was Mr Price’s job to help with various aspects of the soldiers’ welfare, resettlement and housing. At one point when the border with Pakistan was closed, an alternative method of sourcing fuel had to be found! He also had time to trek among the foothills of the Himalayas among friendly people and magnificent scenery. It was a thoroughly enjoyable talk.

After tea and biscuits members came to the business of the evening, there being several activities on offer from the federation, and places on two forthcoming trips arranged by Ripple WI. It was reported that the WFWI Spring Meeting had been most enjoyable even though the Swan Theatre was rather chilly that morning.

On Tuesday, April 14 at 7.30pm in the village hall Tessa Holloway will be demonstrating the craft of making corn dollies with some participation from the floor. For more information please contact the secretary on 01684 592408.
