THOSE who have children will know what it is like as they wait for a birthday or Christmas.

It can sometimes seem like a long wait. Then the day arrives and there is great excitement as they discover their presents.

Monday will see people in churches remembering the long wait is over and discovering the gift of God. It is the day when the church remembers Simeon, an old man who was promised a saviour, discovers that the promise has come true. He goes to the Temple and Jerusalem and finds for himself Jesus. He recognises him as his saviour and rejoices when he discovers that what God promises really does happen.

The excitement of the old man can be heard in his words, “my eyes have seen the glory of the Lord”. But let those just be the words of an old man living two thousand years ago, let them be the words of joy that you want to echo as you discover for yourself that God has given you and me a gift, in sending Jesus to be our light and our saviour.
