AT the end of February 2014, the Ripple Parish Hall Management Committee agreed to support the formation of a Parish Short Mat Bowls Club, by purchasing two second hand mats and several sets of bowls.

In the following ten months, under the leadership of Monica Carter, the club has grown in numbers, and now plays every Monday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm and Tuesday morning between 10am and noon.

Monica commented “We have 16 people who play regularly and a few more every now and again. However, we are still keen to recruit more members, and open up other sessions during the week. Previous experience is not required; in fact most of us playing now had never picked up a bowl prior to this opportunity. The first session is free, and we supply all the equipment – anybody who wants to try it need only bring a pair of flat rubber soled shoes!”

In order to gain experience, the Club has completed a series of friendly games with surrounding clubs, and has six more arranged before mid March. The Club also entered a team in the last Summer’s League. Monica added, “Apart from the exercise, we have a good social gathering over a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit. We don’t mind if members simply wish to play socially, or would like to enter competitions; we will accommodate everybody”
