DOUBTLESS St James's Church will be full as always for the candlelit carol service at 6.30pm on Sunday.

This will be followed by (free) mince pies and refreshments in church as people mix and share the festive spirit.

Perhaps we rather take for granted the extra work involved in this event for the handful of people who keep the church going. This year they are inviting help from those who are not regular attenders, but who value this occasion which so unites our whole community. This can include bringing mince pies and helping with practical aspects of the service – acting as sidespeople, serving refreshments and clearing up, lighting and putting out candles.

Sidespeople are also sought for the Crib Service (5.30pm on Christmas Eve), the Midnight service starting at 11.30pm Christmas Eve): and the Christmas Morning service (10.30am). If you are willing to help, please let Reverend Rosemary Herbert know (01684 572497).

Tomorrow Saturday, there will be carols at the Brewers Arms at 8pm, led by the West Malvern Voices.

Last Sunday's Afternoon Tea at the Village Hall raised a splendid £300 plus for the Air Ambulance, despite a rather disappointing attendance, due perhaps to a dismal afternoon and peoples' pre-Christmas commitments. Sadly, as few as two little hands may have dipped into David Father Christmas Matthews' bran tub. But the sight of Santa negotiating his facial whiskers as he consumed a cream-covered scone provided considerable entertainment for those present!

A merry Christmas to everyone in our beautiful and friendly village.
