TWO West Malvern residents, Katie Francis and Duncan Hedges, made global news this week after narrowly avoiding the Annapurna avalanche disaster while on a trekking holiday in Nepal.

Mural artist Katie has worked a remarkable, largely DIY transformation on the former post office on West Malvern Road since moving into the village some years ago. She is also responsible for the realistic trompe l'oeil 'postbox' and cobblestones painted outside.

Ex-soldier Duncan made an influential contribution, based on his personal experience in Afghanistan and Iraq, to the debate at the Annual Parish Meeting in May on the project to convert former retirement home Adelaide House into a rehabilitation centre for ex-service personnel suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

Our whole community will be delighted that despite a terrifying experience, the couple escaped death or injury in Nepal.

To date there have been no further visible developments on the Adelaide House conversion, although work on internal alterations had been expected to begin in August.

Meanwhile, yet another planning application has been submitted for the site of the now-closed Lamb Inn at 78 West Malvern Road. The latest plan – at least the third submitted by the present owner - is for a three bedroom dwelling with car parking space. At the time of writing, no further details of the application, no. 14/01410/FUL, were available on the MHDC web site.
