WELL, the sun shone for us! Lots of people, young and old, were out and about around the village on Monday afternoon enjoying the events for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

A huge thank you to all those – too many to name – who put so much time and effort into making the day such a success. It’s impossible to mention everything that was going on, and I’m sure there was lot’s that I missed! The children all seemed very enthusiastic in their hunt for the treasure, finding clues along the road, in the church, village hall and places along the way, before they joined others having refreshments provided by the WI.

Literary Heritage and village memorabilia were also on the menu – it was interesting to see a photo of the bonfire built for Queen Victoria’s 1897 Jubilee beacon – it was quite a structure!

Music, singing, ice-cream, flower arrangements, children’s art, pig roast and Jubilee mugs were all on the agenda – good fun for all!

I understand that a few of the specially designed West Malvern Jubilee mugs are still available, so if anyone missed out and would like one, they should contact David Sharp on 573213.

So, now what do we have to look forward to? Well, there’s plenty more happening in the village over the next few months.

When the WI meet on Thursday, June 14, they should have an interesting evening. Joe, a local farrier, will be demonstrating how to make a horseshoe and then how to attach it to the horse’s hoof. Everyone should meet at the school as usual, but I think a little walk on to suitable ground will be required.

It is the community market on Friday, June 15, between 3.15pm and 4.15pm in the school hall – a good opportunity for all of us to buy or sell local produce. Then the following Friday, June 22, it is the school’s summer fair from 3.30pm.

The school has also got involved in the Olym-picnic which is on Sunday, June 24, at the Elim International Conference Centre.

There will be an Olympic parade led by children from the school down to the venue, which will be followed by games for all the family – including a tug-of-war and a wife-carrying race!

You will have received a programme and an entry form enclosed in your copy of The Hills Echo, so, a group team for the tug-of-war perhaps, or entering the triathlon, see what is right for you. For those of us who are a little less active, there will be a barbecue, cream teas and the opportunity to watch all the fun!

However, volunteers are also needed to sort entry forms and steward events on the day; if you can spare a couple of hours to help, please e-mail Anna Brook at anna@iapetus.co.uk.

We also have things to look forward to in July and August when there will be West Fest and the West Malvern Arts Festival – a busy summer!
