THE circus is not a suitable place for any animal, whether it be wild or domesticated.

Performing animals spend most of their time in cramped, inadequate accommodation in transit from town to town or even from country to country.

Living in such a deprived, unnatural environment is, in itself, stressful but, in addition, they are subjected to suspect training methods.

Undercover investigations have exposed shocking abuse, such as elephants being viciously beaten, leading to prosecutions and convictions for animal cruelty.

The ultimate degradation is that they are forced to perform tricks that in many cases, are not only alien to their nature but also uncomfortable or even painful, putting considerable strain on their bodies.

For example, elephants being forced to stand on their front legs or horses being forced to stand and walk on their hind legs.

The subjugation and exploitation of animals is neither entertaining nor educational and has no place in a progressive, enlightened society.
