THE brief formal business was to discuss and approve the national annual resolution – which this year was a call for the Government to increase the numbers, training an deployment of midwives in England and Wales.

Members had already had advice and direction from the Federation and from Horwich WI, which had proposed the motion. Members overwhelmingly agreed and supported the resolution. Local business included plans for a forthcoming tip to Pershore.

The guest speaker was Max Able – an engaging and talented amateur artist who assured members that anyone can be a painter.

Max shared his enthusiasm and talents with members by creating a watercolour landscape while exploring the principles and materials of monochrome landscape.

Throughout he stressed the key ideas of simplicity and directness.

Using the transparency of the paint, working carefully – but never fussily – down the paper, grading the light from light to dark, making bold and strong brushstrokes. All the while his delightful landscape, in blue on white paper, emerged so that members could really appreciate his understanding and skill.

Max offered much practical advice too – the importance of tone to enhance shape and structure, the choice and care of materials and equipment, the need to be relaxed and to enjoy painting!

He was an assuring and affirming enthusiast, and the vote of thanks for his talk and demonstration was heartily endorsed by everyone.

The competition entries were objects associated with painting – understandably there were a few brushes and paint tubes – but the prize went to a maulstick!

The next meeting will be on June 7 when members will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. New members are always welcome.
