A BED-and-breakfast in Hanley Swan is hoping to flush poverty away by twinning one of its guest toilets with a latrine in Burundi.

The Kingfisher B&B is taking part in the Toilet Twinning scheme, which offers a quirky way to do something about the 2.6 billion people living without decent sanitation.

The B&B donated £60 to twin the loo. Every twinning helps families have their own latrine and supports community hygiene education and projects to supply clean water.

Kingfisher’s landlady, Rev Biddi Kings, said: “These days B&B guests expect their loo to be en suite – how lucky is that when for so many people any form of loo is a luxury?

“This is my first en suite twinned loo and I hope to complete the set of four in time. If nothing else, it provides an interesting starting point for conversations over breakfast.”

In recognition of the twinning, the B&B received a framed certificate of its twin in central Africa, complete with photo and GPS coordinates, so visitors can look it up on Google.
