DELICIOUS home made soups were on the menu at Powick Parish Hall last Saturday lunch time when the committee of the forthcoming summer Angel Festival served many people. There was a choice of creamy parsnip, carrot and ginger, tomato and bean, and onion with cheese soup all served with garlic or French bread and croutons. The soup was hot and filling and was followed by tea or coffee and homemade biscuits including lemon or ginger angel biscuits. Tables were laid with vases of flowers and soup was brought to the table while music played in the background and friends chatted. Proceeds amounting to £200 were divided between the Lyttelton Well in Malvern and Powick’s Angel Festival being held in June.

Last week’s walk by Powick Ramblers was on a cold and frosty morning on Kempsey Common. Eighteen walkers and three dogs enjoyed the bright sunshine and even saw two roe deer in Pirton Wood.

On Monday nine walkers and Tilly the dog met at the Red Lion, Stiffords Bridge, for the four mile walk which lasted 2 ½ hours led by Garth Lowe. Starting off in dull but windy weather conditions, the walkers followed the Cradley Brook via Vinesend Lane and over footpaths to Cradley. On reaching Halesend with barn conversions and some charming cottages the route led towards Storridge but soon branched off left to follow the limestone ridge towards Bearwood. At Archers Mill, on the Leigh Brook, the mill still has its original mill machinery, and there three alpacas were seen grazing in the field. The footpath then led on to Bean House where horses were stabled and followed the bridleway and paths back to Stiffords Bridge over fields where pheasant feeders were in plenty. By this time the sun had broken through and in sheltered places snowdrops and yellow aconites were in flower. Lunch was taken in The Red Lion and Garth was thanked for leading the pleasant circular walk.

Next week’s walk is on Thursday, February 17, meeting at the March Hare at Broughton Hackett on the A422 (GR 923543) at 10am. The five mile is to Crowle Foxmere Court and Bow Wood and is an easy walk which may well be muddy! The leader is Don (01905 820615).
