PALM Sunday was celebrated in Powick with the blessings of palms and a drama presentation of the Passion of Christ ended the service. Ian Gane directed the drama which he had adapted to include a large cast including members of the choir, with church wardens Chris Ramsden as Jesus and Terry Maple as Peter; Pilot was played by Neville Radburn and Herod by Paul Higgins. At Callow End the children of Junior Church had an Easter egg hunt around St James’ Church.

For Easter Sunday the church was beautifully decorated with yellow and white flowers and greenery and also included an Easter garden. After the service led by Reverend Sue Irwin, small eggs were given to the congregation and Easter biscuits made by Neville Radburn were eaten with coffee.

Powick Ramblers’ walk last week experienced a sunny day with a cold wind for their walk on the Malvern Hills led by Bob. There were many steep muddy slopes on the four ½ mile walk which began at the Wyche cutting. The rain kept off till the last stretch along the road back to the cars. Next Wednesday, April 14 the five ½ mile walk begins at the church in Chaddesley Corbett (GR 893736) at 10.am.The circular walk takes in Chaddesley Woods with an additional three mile walk after lunch to Harvington Hall. The leader is Don Woodfin (01905 820615).

On Tuesday, April 13 a quiz night at The Three Nuns, Colletts Green, will take place at 7.30pm with entry of £1 per person and is in aid of the Powick Sheep Dog Trials.

Powick Parish Council currently has vacancies across the parish and is looking for people who are passionate about the community in which they live and who could represent either Powick or Callow End at the next Parish Council Elections. Powick Book Fair is held on Sunday, April 11 in Powick Parish Hall from 10am till 3pm. This week Usborne Children’s Books will be on sale and the representative Vicki Whitehouse will be on hand to give advice.

Powick Bell Ringers are looking for new members to join the team. Anyone over the age of 13 years could come and see what is entailed. There are six bells in the Tower and are rung on Sunday mornings with practice night on Wednesdays from 7.30pm till 9pm. Please contact Paul Smith on 01905 350741.

Powick Guild welcomed Mo and Gerry Taggart to the March meeting to hear about their efforts in joining a sponsored bike ride to Paris to raise funds for Help the Heroes. Mo, an ex QA nurse, described some of the many events over the five days of the ride and Gerry explained the very sophisticated workings of their bicycles and the backup they had received.. £50 people had taken part including many disabled riders. The ride ended at the Arc de Triomphe to the sounds of a military band playing the French National anthem. The guild meets again on Tuesday at 2.30pm when members are asked to bring old photographs (family, school, wedding) in order that they can be identified!

A series of eight Bible studies begins on Monday, April 12 in St James’ Church, Callow End, looking at famous women of the Old Testament, including Ruth, Sarah, Hannah and Abigail. The meetings are at 2.30pm till 4pm and include refreshments. All are welcome.

Advance notice is given of a St George’s Day Prize Quiz and Supper on Friday, April 23 at 7.30pm in Powick parish Hall. The quiz master is Tony Seldon and teams are invited at the cost of £10 per person. The price includes a traditional bangers and mash supper and committee dessert, Tea and coffee is available during the interval but please bring your own drink. Entry is by ticket only in advance from Sally Gurney (01905 830756) or Peter Gedge (01905 831089). The event is organised by the Friends of St Peter’s.
