"CLAIMED to be a world record price for a book. £65,000 was paid on Tuesday at Sotheby's in London by Mr H P Kraus of New York, for an Apocalypse manuscript illuminated at the Abbey of St Alban's about 1250," reported the Gazette 50 years ago.

"It was included in the second portion of the illuminated manuscripts from the collection of the late Mr C Dyson Perrins of Malvern.

"The first portion was old at Sotheby's in December last year for £326,620. The Apocalypse contains 82 miniatures depicting St John as a spectator of events which he recorded in the Revelation."

Elsewhere, the Gazette reported that "recipients of the traditional Wimbury Dole of Castlemorton will on New Year's Day receive portions of cake instead of the customary bread. The cake will be distributed by the Vicar (the Rev G T Haigh) after morning surface.
