A filmmaker has shot a comedy-drama inspired by her mum’s work as a community nurse in Malvern.

Hayley Calleia, who was born and raised in the town, filmed Patience in Malvern last month.

It is currently in post-production and will be entered into major film festivals in the new year.

Patience is the first film written by Hayley, who said she wants to “tell stories from underrepresented people in underrepresented places that deserve a spotlight”.

Several scenes were shot in the car park of Malvern Community Hospital.

“The inspiration was my mum’s diaries of her experiences as a district nurse in Malvern,” said Hayley, who says nursing helped her mum Nina Coates turn her life around.

“They are full of funny anecdotes and moving stories. And it feels like the right time, with the cost of living crisis and the funding of the NHS in the news.

“Community nursing is an absolutely crucial part of society yet so under-funded and under-appreciated.

“Not many people know about district nurses but they’re so important - they keep people out of hospitals and in their own homes.

“It’s our mission to shine a light on the sector in any way we can.”

Hayley, who went to primary school in Colwall and to John Masefield High School in Ledbury, is now based in London but says she is proud to be working class and from Malvern.

“I always knew I’d go to London,” she said, “so I only applied to universities in London, went to Goldsmiths when I was 18 and never left.

“I worked a lot of random jobs and then was lucky to get into drama school at the first attempt.

“I know I’ve been lucky so far - getting into this industry is almost impossible for someone like me.”

Hayley was delighted to work with director Louis Chan on Patience, which is a production of Fresh Look Films.

“This is his last short film before he goes off to make TV for the BBC, so we were lucky to get him,” she said.
