A NEW documentary will highlight the role a Malvern school played in turning the course of the Second World War.

The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayers, is airing tomorrow (Friday, September 9) and features a visit to Malvern to meet Anne Diamond, BBC reporter and local resident, to discover the hidden secrets of Malvern’s radar families.

Malvern is where scientists fine-tuned radar which helped lead Britain to victory during World War 2, and was previously dubbed 'The Hidden Bletchley’, the Telecommunications Research Establishment.

Keith Metcalf, Headmaster at Malvern College, said: “Around 2,000 radar scientists moved from the South Coast to Malvern during the war when the coast became too dangerous for them, with some of them staying here at Malvern College.

“It was because of them that Britain’s fighter pilots knew that the enemy was incoming before they should have known.

“But of course, it was all top secret - but now thanks to Anne, the true heroism of these young men and women is being realised.”

Anne Diamond is the daughter of a radar scientist and is passionate about shining a light on the heroic efforts of her ancestors.

Mr Metcalf said: “It was a privilege to welcome Anne along with Pam and the TV crew to Malvern College so they could explore Malvern’s radar history.

“I’m sure many Malvern locals have no idea of the significance their town and their ancestors played in the war,  so we are excited to help bring this story to them."

The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayers will air at 8pm on Channel 5 tomorrow.
