A SEVEN year old girl is raising money to put together shoe boxes of food for homeless people in the county.

Katie Spanswick has also collected special food donations from Tesco and plans to hand out the boxes at a food kitchen run by Worcestershire Homeless Appeal (WHA).

“She is a very selfless girl – it’s something that she wanted to do, and we’ve helped her,” said mum Sarah Evans.

The Hindlip First School pupil also helps her mum volunteer at disability sailing sessions, held at Upton Warren Outdoor Education Centre.

“Last year, we did the shoe boxes to send abroad – the Christmas ones,” said Miss Evans, 28, from Droitwich.

“Katie said to me: ‘I want to help people in this country’ – and so began her new venture.”

Miss Evans said she got in touch with WHA who were happy to support Katie’s efforts, while dad Graham, 37, has taken her to Tesco to collect food donations.

Katie plans to donate her boxes to homeless people at a food kitchen in October rather than Christmas time.

“Everyone does it at Christmas, but people are homeless all year round,” said Miss Evans.

Katie, who has a four-year-old sister called Jessica, is also raising money through other means including taking part in a children’s triathlon.

Miss Evans is then helping her daughter organise a potential charity raffle and is appealing for prizes to be donated.

Launched in 2015, the WHA is based in Droitwich and collects food, clothing and other donations to be given to homeless people and others struggling in the county.
