THE councillor who represents Cathedral on the city council is calling for clarity over the future of a unit in the city's £20m shopping plaza.

Previously the Worcester News has reported that Byron burgers plan to open an outlet in the plaza appears to be in serious doubt, after it was revealed Byron could close up to 20 restaurants nationally as part of a financial rescue proposal. Last week the chain's creditors and landlords gave near overwhelming backing to the rescue plan.

The Press Association has said the Worcester outlet is one of the 20. This means it is “at risk of closure”, before it has even opened.

Despite approaches to the firm a spokesman for Byron has told the paper it doesn't comment on individual outlets, pointing us to their statement on the general situation.

And a spokesman for property firm Salmon Harvester, the developers behind Cathedral Square, has told the paper it can provide "no update" on the future of the unit.

The spokesman said: "They signed an agreement on a lease for the unit.

"There is no update."

In a previous statement last October Salmon said Byron was on course to move into Cathedral Square. The planned schedule then was occupation taking place in January, with the restaurant opening "in the spring".

On Tuesday the unit looked exactly as it has done since the opening of Cathedral Square six months ago, with a colourful Byron board, and no signs of activity inside.

Councillor Lynn Denham, who represents the Cathedral ward, said it was disappointing Byron had not occupied the unit so far.

"It is regrettable when any business is in financial trouble," Mrs Denham said.

"It doesn't look like they will be coming now.

"This unit is in a prime position.

"This situation needs to be clarified as soon as possible, so that another company could look at taking it up.

"It is a shame - it could create jobs for local people."
