THE leader of Malvern Hills District Council says he is stepping down from the post "with a heavy heart", but says he is proud of his stint of leadership.

Cllr Phil Grove says he will not be putting himself forward for the post at the council's annual; meeting on Tuesday evening, having served two full terms as the council's leader.

He said: "It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing I am standing down as leader of the Conservative Group and therefore leader of Malvern Hills District Council.

"When I was first elected to the role two years ago I said I would only serve two terms. That has now come to an end and so I am sticking to my word and have withdrawn my name for re-election as leader.

"I am very proud of everything that has been achieved under my leadership.

"We have a five-year plan which sets out our vision for this district and is a clear signal of our ambitions going forward.

"We have a business plan which shows how we will balance the books while protecting frontline services.

"We're working harder than ever to re-engage with our residents and ensure their views play more of a role in our decision-making.

"Having laid the foundations for a stable and successful future for the council and the district, I feel now is the right time for a new person to take charge, someone with a fresh pair of eyes and potentially a new approach to the problems that lie ahead and the difficult decisions that need to be taken.

"I'd like to pay tribute to all the staff and my fellow councillors of all parties for their support, advice and their constructive challenge over the last two years."

The council is holding its annual meeting on Tuesday at the Council Chamber, Avenue Road, starting at 8.30pm.
