A SPORTS centre in Malvern has raised £1425.46 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The MSJ Sports and Fitness Centre, Barnards Green Road, raised the money with s series of events including a gym challenges, cake sales, Santa circuit runs and a bonfire night celebration.

Fitness instructor Fiona Zelley, who coordinated the fundraising, said: “We wanted to show our support for the Alzheimer’s Society, as it is widely recognised that exercise can have a positive effect on people living with dementia.

“We are pleased to have raised money to go towards much-needed research into the disease, as well as increasing awareness that physical and mental exercise can be beneficial. Our thanks go to everyone who contributed.”

The efforts to embrace dementia awareness have extended beyond fundraising, and staff have demonstrated their commitment to becoming more dementia-friendly.

Carmel Callaghan, a member of the gym, said: “Over the last year the staff at the centre have made a huge contribution towards creating a more dementia-friendly community in Malvern. They have hosted and attended Dementia Friends information sessions and these help to raise awareness of dementia and encourage individuals to take action.

"The fundraising events organised throughout the year have created an opportunity for gym members to raise lots of money for Alzheimer’s Society, whilst having lots of fun.”

Emma Dowler, community fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are delighted that MSJ Sports has raised such a fantastic amount for Alzheimer’s Society. This will help us to reach more people living with dementia. Thank you to all at MSJ Sports.”
